US Fish and Wildlife Service Hatchery Review Team

In the last edition of the LLTK E-News we highlighted members of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's 21st Century Salmon and Steelhead Project planning team, who've just completed a new departmental decision-making framework for salmon and steelhead.
In this edition, we recognize the efforts of another team that is working hard to improve the ways that decisions are made about salmon in our region. The US Fish and Wildlife Service's (USFWS) Hatchery Review Team, facilitated by LLTK Director of Fish Programs Michael Schmidt, has worked since 2005 to apply the principals developed by the Hatchery Scientific Review Group during the Puget Sound and Coastal Washington Hatchery Reform Project (2000-2005) in a comprehensive review of all USFWS hatcheries in the Columbia and Snake River basins, as well as on the Olympic Peninsula.
The USFWS Hatchery Review Team, comprised of Service and other federal scientists, is conducting field tours with hatchery managers and staff, reviewing hatchery operations, and meeting with the co-managing agencies and tribes to get a clear understanding of the goals for and status of each wild and hatchery population, and associated habitat and management strategies.
"Our goal is to ensure that our hatcheries are operated on the best scientific principles and contribute to sustainable fisheries and the recovery of naturally spawning populations of salmon," said Dan Diggs, USFWS Assistant Regional Director.
USFWS Hatchery Review Team members, pictured above, include: (front row, left to right) Doug Olson, Don Campton, Susan Gutenberger, Larry Telles, Larry Marchant, and (back row, left to right) Carl Schreck, Doug DeHart, Tom Flagg, Joe Krakker, Ray Brunson, David Carie, Dave Zajac. Team members not pictured include: Barry Berejikian, Ron Hardy, Bryan Kenworthy, Chris Pasley, Herb Pollard, and Bruce Stewart.
The team has published its findings and recommendations in a series of reports that are available to the public at http://www.fws.gov/pacific/fisheries/hatcheryreview/.
